Cultural Q & A

What follows is an example of a real-life success story; one where cultures crossed, where lessons were learned, and where a life was forever changed.

It's an example of how (through patience and understanding) we can transcend issues related to cultural, ethnic and racial differences; issues that exist at home and abroad.

Q: Christopher, after reading A Magnificent Exchange, I came away thinking that it was really your story. How would you say your life has been impacted by living in Japan?

A: Well, as a child I didn't quite understand (or appreciate) the impact this incredible experience would have on my life. But now, I consider myself quite fortunate to have been awarded the unique opportunity to have lived in and been educated in a foreign country. I learned to speak a new language, forged new friendships, and learned to understand, appreciate and embrace a new culture. It was a priceless experience; one that has helped to make me the person I am today. And upon returning to the United States, my parents enrolled me in Japanese School on Saturday mornings and arranged private Japanese tutors to ensure that I would continue my language skills. For that, I am eternally grateful.

I now view myself as "a citizen of the world" who has an open mind and a global perspective. I am optimistic and enthusiastic about a bright and promising future that will be filled with endless opportunities in this country and abroad.

Q. Christopher, what would you say was your most profound "lesson learned" from your experience?

A. I would have to say that that most profound lesson I learned was the importance of good manners (which never goes out of style). Good manners is indeed a sensitive awareness of the feelings of others and works in any culture and any situation.
